Magnesium Supplementation

Desired value (ppm)
Current value
Volume of Water

MgCl2.6(H20) - ONLY g oz
Epsom salts - ONLY g oz
MgCl2.6(H20) - IN BALANCED MIX g oz
Epsom Salts - IN BALANCED MIX g oz

Although magnesium is only slowly removed from the average aquarium, every so often it is worth checking its level and bringing the level back towards NSW.

This calculator is designed to allow you to enter the value that you desire, the current value, and the net volume of water in your aquarium (including sump).

It expresses the results in 3 ways. If you are only using magnesium chloride (which is normally MgCl2.6H20), if you are only using Epsom salts (MgS04.7H20), or if you are using a blend of the two. To get the blend ratio I used the ratio of chloride ions to sulphate ions in NSW (550:56).

Personally I would not try to raise the magnesium levels more than 50ppm per day.

Note that these chemicals tend to absorb water over time so this is only a starting point, you may need a little more than the weights calculated. However, start with these values and then TEST!
